Chapter 27

Mats Karlsson's 13-year-old spoke to him one Saturday morning at breakfast. "Daaaaad, why are you spending so much time in your room? I wanted to talk to you last night."

"Sorry honey. A friend of mine showed me something really neat and I'm practicing."

"Can I practice too?"

"You wouldn't like it sweetheart. You have to sit in a chair for an hour without moving."

"Yuck. I'm going over to Patty and Karen's." She was halfway out the door when Mats shouted. "Be back by dinner OK Lena?"

"OK dad!"

He knew she'd keep her word and it made him feel good. Somehow, despite his failed marriage, the girls were turning out just fine.

Max cleaned up and drove to the Full Moon. In fifteen minutes John Frankel would arrive to teach him the second stage of the procedure. Mats paced back and forth between stacks of boxes in the crowded storeroom. He was impatient to get going. Anyone who knew him well would remark it as unusual behavior.

He loved the store and the kids but they did tie him down a bit. Mats Karlsson had a romantic, adventurous streak that needed an outlet. John's stories of adventuring sounded wild. The rational side of Mats didn't really believe it was possible to turn yourself into a rocket and blast off to other planets. But you could have a lot of fun with Virtual Reality games sitting in your chair. Maybe it was something like that.

For the past week Mats had brought up the egg-shaped space in his mind, probing it for more information. When that little fellow entered the egg Mats saw the landscape of another planet. It was an ocean world with strange looking vegetation and beautiful ships upon calm seas. A great orange-colored sun hung just over the horizon in a pale rose sky. Straight overhead a series of multicolored moons shone their pale light upon the water. The world had a different feel to it, and called to him strongly. In Mats' veins coursed the blood of ancient explorers, sea-going adventurers who had found the new world long before Columbus. Oh, to walk upon that shore! To meet the people who lived there! His heart sang with the lure of that beautiful place.

Several weeks of searching the back of the store had not revealed the egg. According to what John said, the transportals always remained fixed in position. Either someone turned the damned thing off or you needed a special gizmo to see it.

Mats had practiced stage one for two hours every day. He was chomping at the bit for the next part of the recipe. After each of the sessions he felt incredibly serene and powerful. His muscular body felt as light as a feather.

When John arrived Mats was ready and eager. "C'mon boy, show me that next level."

John cautioned Mats. "The technique up to the middle of stage two can be taught. That will get you poised to make the great leap. But only you can take the final step." John
